Tame Impala are on the All Points East line-up

SO, now that we’ve outlined some of the great gigs and festivals to look forward to up to the end of April – and no doubt they have been diligently added to wall planners all over the place – we thought we’d bring you part two of our 2020 preview, with a little glimpse of some of the gigs and festivals to be announced so far. As we said last week, the city is rich with venues and talent, so keep an eye on this page weekly for a wider selection of gigs, events and news.

MAY

• Mods Mayday, Round Chapel, Hackney (May 3). Expect some of the best live bands from the Mod scene, along with stalls, visuals and DJs, for one of the most essential days in the Mod calendar. Hosted by Eddie Piller, the line-up includes: Kenney Jones (drummer with The Small Faces, Faces and The Who); Mod revivalists Secret Affair; Brighton Mod revival group The Lambrettas; The Truth, formed in 1982 by Nine Below Zero’s Dennis Greaves and Mick Lister; The Chords UK, the continuation of Mod revival group The Chords, featuring songwriter Chris Pope; The Circles; Squire; and Small World.

• Despacio, Roundhouse (May 21-22). LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Soulwax’s David and Stephen Dewalee present a vinyl-only curation on a 50,000-watt sound system.

• All Points East, Victoria Parks (May 22-31). APE brings some of the coolest acts to Victoria Park. While most dates are yet to be announced, we do know Tame Impala, Caribou, Kraftwerk 3d, Iggy Pop, Grandmaster Flash and Anna Calvi are among the names revealed so far. Midweek community festival In The Neighbourhood will also return, with workshops, films, music and more free activities.

• Damon Albarn: The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows, Barbican (May 26). Blur frontman and composer Albarn presents his new project inspired by the landscapes of Iceland.

JUNE

• Yungblud, The Forum (June 3-4). Yorkshire rapper YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison), has become an international sensation, drawing crowds to Times Square when he tweeted he’d be in the neighbourhood.

• The Killers, Emirates Stadium (June 6). This is a big one. If you haven’t got tickets and live in the vicinity, why not have a free garden listening party – The Killers live from your own home.

Noel Gallagher

• Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Kenwood House (June 21). Noel has left Oasis behind with exclusive London outdoor show in the grounds of Kenwood House, overlooking Hampstead Heath.

JULY

• British Summer Time Festival (BST), Hyde Park (July 4-11). With more names to be announced, we know Taylor Swift, Pearl Jam, Pixies, Little Mix and Rita Ora are already on the line-up.

AUGUST

• Maiden Voyage Festival, Three Mills Island, E3 (August 30). You’ll have to venture east to enjoy the Jazz Cafe’s jazz and hip-hop festival.

SEPTEMBER

• London Folk Festival, Cecil Sharp House (Sept 5). An all-day event celebrating the best of the British Folk Scene, including Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar, The Askew Sisters, Gilmore & Roberts, Jacob & Drinkwater, Sam Carter, and Cup O’Joe alongside workshops, singarounds and more.

OCTOBER

• David Essex, London Palladium (October 20). Get nostalgic with the familiar tones of David Essex.

NOVEMBER

• Michael Kiwanuka, Alexandra Palace (Nov 27). Humble singer Michael, who lived in a studio in Kentish Town while working on his acclaimed albums, and has built an orphanage in Uganda, produces consistently stunning music.

DECEMBER

• Ocean Colour Scene, Roundhouse (Dec 12 + 13). If you’ve ever been to an OCS gig you’ll know that the Birmingham band have the ability to unite a mostly male-dominated crowd in such rousing singalongs that you would not be surprised if the venue’s roof lifted off in the euphoria. They have already had to announce a second date and no doubt the shows will be as uplifting as ever. Tom Clarke, formerly of The Enemy, supports, playing an Enemy greatest hits set as well as original tracks.
